~ Book Review : Eleanor and Park ~

Book Six : Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

When Eleanor got on the bus that afternoon, the Asian kid opened up Watchmen right where they'd left off. They were still reading it when they got to Eleanor's stop - there was so much going on, they both stared at every frame for, like, entire minutes - when she got up to leave, he handed it to her.
Eleanor was so surprise, she tried to hand it back, but he'd already turned away. She shoved the comic between her books like it was something secret, then got off the bus.
She read it three more times that night, lying on the top bunk, petting the scrubby old cat. Then she put it in her grapefruit box overnight, so that nothing would happen to it.
When she got to their seat, he was looking out the window. She handed him the comic, and he took it.
The next morning, when Eleanor got on the bus, there was a stack of comics on her seat.

TWO MISFITS. ONE EXTRAORDINARY LOVE.
It's 1986 and two star-crossed teens are smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you'll remember your own first love--and just how hard it pulled you under.

My Thoughts : Last year, it seemed everyone was talking about Rainbow Rowell. I was nervous, that with all the hype surrounding Eleanor and Park, that it would not be able to meet my expectations. I can honestly say it was a really beautiful book.

Eleanor is a new girl at school, she is a little on the chubby side, and has a horrible home life. Park is from a pretty normal family, loves reading comics, and listening to music. On Eleanor's first day at school, she can't find a seat on the bus. Finally, Park allows her to seat next to him, and then the story takes off. I choose that quote at the top because Eleanor and Park were just two strangers, stuck sharing a seat on the bus, then, with time, it turns into something more. I love all the scenes with Eleanor and Park on the bus. Half the time they aren't even talking to each other but the chemistry between them jumps off the pages. I found myself smiling so many times during this book. I also found myself so upset with Eleanor's home life. It makes me so sad to know this kind of life is a reality to so many kids. Again, I thought Rowell wrote it beautifully. I was wondering how it would all come to a conclusion, and I was not let down. The last two lines were so perfect.

When I read Eleanor and Park, I was not aware of all the controvesry. I will leave a link here for you if you want to go and read that. I feel Rainbow Rowell defended her book really well.

I do have to say there is a lot of swearing in this book. The first page had the f word in it twice. Yes, this is a young adult book but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under sixteen.
